Kittle Gelbvieh Farms is a registered Gelbvieh cattle operation
located in Geraldine, Alabama
(approximately 20 miles from Fort
Payne).
Johnny Kittle is the owner and operator of Kittle Gelbvieh
Farms.
As a history and background to Kittle Gelbvieh Farms, Johnny Kittle grew up in the State of Alabama working on his grandparents' farm during the "Cattle Depression" of the 1970s. At that time, the cattle business had deteriorated to the point where they were forced to slaughter their cattle for beef to sell to the public simply to survive in the business. In 1972, at the age of fourteen (14), Johnny obtained a government agricultural loan to purchase cattle for his own operation. Johnny has continued to manage that operation in DeKalb County, Alabama for the past 39 years.
Gelbvieh cattle have been a part of Johnny Kittle's cattle
business for more than 25 years. Gelbvieh is a dual purpose cattle
breed which originated in Bavaria, Germany at the end of the 18th
century. While the breed was once known as the "German Yellow,"
Gelbveih cattle are either a honey gold to red color or black (due
to crossbreeding with Angus cattle). Johnny first targeted Gelbvieh
cattle for his own operation because of a specific set of breed traits
(which are still found in the breed today with some improvements):
1) Birth Weights (even lower now than past years);
2) Milking (a top breed quality);
3) Temperaments (excellent);
4) Growth (outstanding weaning and yearling weights).
With Kittle Gelbvieh Farms, Johnny Kittle has now
focused his cattle operation on the Gelbvieh breed. If you are
seeking to purchase Gelbvieh cattle for your own operation or would
simply like to learn more about the breed, please feel free to
contact us or stop by our farm in Northeast Alabama
when you are in the area.
Our herd was built with females bred to produce quality calves that are calm, thick, and have low birth weights. They possess milking ability and excellent growth rates.
Got milk? We do and lots of it!
